Oakview Elementary School
Apex, North Carolina
Oakview Elementary is a prototype design in an “E-plan” configuration, in which three classroom wings branch from the main core curriculum and administration spaces. Using Wake County Public School Systems space standards, the facility accommodates 800 students with a core for 900 students.
The first floor incorporates administration and student services spaces; a media center; dining and multipurpose play areas; art and music classrooms; resource rooms; and kindergarten, first-, and second-grade classrooms. Mechanical platforms are situated above each classroom wing and accommodate 4-pipe VAV mechanical system equipment. In the lofted bridge above, which links the upper-level classroom wings, small learning common areas have been created for use as breakout and study spaces. These areas also are easily supervised by the upper-level assistant principal’s office, which overlooks these areas.
The second floor houses resource rooms as well as third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms. Each teaching space is equipped with a 70-inch flat-panel television for screen sharing, and Wi-Fi is distributed throughout the facility.
